Important Changes in Traffic Laws and Fines for Breaking Traffic Lights in Saudi Arabia

On the occasion of the advent of the 2023 Hajj season, the General Directorate of Traffic in Saudi Arabia has announced some important changes in traffic laws, especially with regard to traffic lights. The aim of these changes is to reduce the number of road accidents, especially in urban areas crowded with pilgrims.

Understand the new fines for breaking a traffic light

The violation of crossing the red traffic light is very serious, and the General Traffic Department in Saudi Arabia has increased the fine for this violation. Currently, the fine can be up to 6,000 Saudi riyals, with fines starting at 3,000 riyals. And in the case of driving after consuming alcoholic beverages, the fine can reach 10 thousand riyals, in addition to a fine and an additional penalty for drinking alcohol in Saudi Arabia, which may reach 9 months in prison and 80 lashes.

Fines that fall into Schedule VI of the traffic light

The offense of crossing a red traffic light is not the only offense that counts under Schedule VI. There are several other offenses that are equally serious and carry the same penalties:

Overtake school transport buses while they are stopped. Tampering with road signs or reflectors. Do not stop at security checkpoints. Do not stop for the security patrol. Not properly handling animals on the roads. Operating public works vehicles on the roads without taking the necessary measures. Using unlicensed devices inside the vehicle. Organizing races on public roads. Walking in processions without a permit.
