Importance of Media in Climate Change Communication: Insights from Dr. Doria Sharaf Al-Din

She said, in statements to the Emirates News Agency, WAM, on the sidelines of her participation in the International Government Communication Forum, that the forum is very important, especially since it precedes the COP28 conference in less than 80 days, which represents preparation for the public by presenting and presenting a lot of information regarding climate change.

It is noteworthy that the UAE will host the Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP28) during the period from November 30 to December 12 of this year at Expo Dubai, with the participation of heads of state and government, opinion leaders and delegations from more than 70 countries.

Dr. Doria Sharaf Al-Din explained that the COP28 conference will be the focus of attention of the world and media outlets around the world, pointing out that the Emirati media will have a major role in covering the activities of the climate conference.

Dr. Doria Sharaf El-Din described the term “sustainability” as a largely intellectual word that does not reach the average citizen, suggesting the addition of a simplified word that continuously explains the meaning of sustainability and is linked to it.

She called on the media to increase attention to climate issues and point out, with audio and video, the violations that occur in dealing with the climate, dealing with climate risks, preserving the environment, and reaching people through the media in a simpler way than it is now.

Doria Sharaf El-Din said, “The media must tell the individual person, ‘preserve the environment in which you live,’ which is what culture can also do,” stressing the importance of the connection between sound and image in media messages.

She stated that the media is required to produce films that showcase the humanitarian tragedies of countries resulting from natural disasters, and how to bear them, which enhances awareness of dealing with these disasters, as well as stopping continuing to harm nature.

She explained that these media practices can help and enhance an individual’s ability to deal with risks resulting from natural disasters and preserve nature.

She called for the need for local legislation in all countries to keep pace with the world’s interest in preserving the climate, expressing her belief that the current penalties for attacks on the environment and nature may be insufficient.
