Rain Gutters Clogged with Garbage Pose Flooding Risk
We are now entering the rainy season, and it is crucial to manage rain gutters to prevent flood damage in the city. However, these gutters are often clogged with garbage or completely covered, causing significant problems. Our reporter, Park Jong-hyeok of HCN Chungbuk Broadcasting, brings us more on this issue.
When the sewage treatment team members pull up the rainwater inlet trench, they discover all sorts of garbage. From cigarette butts to plastic straws and paper cups, various types of waste are found. According to Seo Jeong-chan, the head of the mobile team at the Sangdang District Office in Cheongju City, there is a significant amount of trash, such as plastic bottles and cigarette butts, that block the rain gutters. This obstruction prevents the water from flowing properly.
Rain gutters, installed between the sidewalk and the road, are essential flood prevention facilities that drain rainwater from the city. However, when garbage accumulates, especially cigarette butts, rainwater flows back and causes flooding damage. As a result, many rain gutters end up covered with rubber plates or piles of garbage. This not only affects the aesthetics of the area but also emits a foul smell, posing a risk of flooding damage to residential areas.
Bae In-soo, the head of the sewage management team at the Sangdang District Office, emphasizes that blocking rain gutters is unacceptable. He urges residents to report any foul smells to the office, as they will promptly install odor prevention covers to address the issue.
According to the National Disaster and Safety Research Institute, if rainwater inlets are blocked by covers and do not function properly, the depth of flooding can be twice as deep as usual. The research also revealed that the rate of flooding to the height of the sidewalk block doubled in such cases.
Despite the risks, there is currently no clear punishment standard for those who block rain gutters. The authorities can only provide guidance on this matter. However, Cheongju City is taking action by supporting the installation of odor prevention covers. It is crucial to raise awareness among citizens about the importance of keeping rain gutters clear and preventing flooding.

What proactive steps can individuals take to prevent clogs in rain gutters and ensure the effective drainage of rainwater
Ey are met with a disturbing sight – rain gutters clogged with an array of garbage. Plastic bottles, fast food wrappers, and even tree branches are among the debris that accumulates in these vital drainage systems.
This is a problem that plagues many cities, but it has become particularly worrying as the rainy season begins. Clogged rain gutters can lead to severe flooding, posing a risk to both property and human lives.
Experts suggest that the accumulation of garbage in rain gutters reduces their capacity to effectively drain rainwater. Instead of flowing freely through the drainage system, water becomes trapped and can overflow onto streets, sidewalks, and even enter buildings.
The consequences of this are not to be taken lightly. Flooding caused by clogged rain gutters can result in extensive property damage, including ruined furniture, flooring, and electronic appliances. In addition, flooded streets can make transportation dangerous and impede emergency responders from reaching people in need.
Despite the obvious risks, many individuals continue to neglect the maintenance of rain gutters, allowing garbage to accumulate over time. The reasons for this negligence vary, from lack of awareness to a simple disregard for the potential consequences.
Local authorities are taking action to address this issue. Public awareness campaigns are being launched to educate residents on the significance of properly maintaining rain gutters. Additionally, law enforcement and municipal workers are being deployed to ensure that gutters are kept free from debris and regularly cleaned.
However, it is not solely the responsibility of the authorities to keep rain gutters clean. Individuals must also take proactive steps to prevent clogs in the first place. This can be done by regularly inspecting gutters and removing any debris that may have accumulated. Additionally, proper waste disposal practices should be followed to prevent garbage from finding its way into the drainage system.
As the rainy season progresses, it is essential that we all play our part in preventing flooding caused by clogged rain gutters. By taking a proactive approach and maintaining these crucial drainage systems, we can ensure the safety and well-being of our communities.
