Gynecological consultation it is recommended annually, even in the absence of any signs or symptoms, because some severe conditions can manifest only in advanced stages, when the treatment is more invasive and the recovery more difficult. This is also valid in the case cervical cancerwhich can be discovered in time, through specific tests, before causing clinical manifestations.
The good news is that this condition can be prevented by vaccination against Human papillomavirus, which is recommended up to the age of 45. With the help of this vaccine, the risk of occurrence is reduced HPV infection, which can cause the appearance of cervical, vulvar, vaginal, anal or penile cancer. For this reason, vaccination is indicated for both girls and women, as well as boys and men.
Regardless of whether or not a patient is vaccinated against HPV, the gynecological consultation remains essential, because it allows the diagnosis of several sexually transmitted diseases. For this purpose, during the consultation, the doctor will collect a sample of vaginal secretion and perform a special test for cervical cancer screening – the Babeş Pap test. With the help of this investigation, even the smallest cellular changes in the cervix can be identified, including the presence of precancerous cells, and treatment can begin early, before the disease progresses.
Also, the doctor can recommend a special test to identify HPV strains – HPV genotyping. The analysis does not establish the presence of malignant cells, as the Babeş Papanicolau test can do, but it allows the identification of the infection, including the viral strain present. If the strain has a high oncogenic risk, the doctor can recommend the patient additional investigations or just a more careful monitoring, through frequent consultations.
Screening tests for cervical cancer and HPV infection are painless, do not involve risks and can be repeated as often as necessary, depending on the doctor’s indication. The collection procedure is very simple and fast: during the gynecological consultation, the doctor uses a special brush, with which he scrapes a few cells from the cervix, then sends these samples for specialized analysis in the laboratory.
In order to establish a definite diagnosis, in case of suspicion of cancer, the gynecologist can also perform a biopsy of the cervix. In this case, the procedure will be performed with anesthesia, for the patient’s comfort. After a cancer diagnosis is made, treatment will be personalized, depending on the stage of the disease, and may include surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, immunotherapy or targeted therapy. If the condition is discovered in time, the operation may only involve the removal of the affected tissue, keeping the cervix intact, so that the patient can continue to be pregnant.
At SANADOR, patients have access to gynecological consultations provided by highly trained doctors and to all tests and investigations necessary for the screening and diagnosis of cervical cancer.
