This week the flu vaccination campaign kicks off in most of the CCAA. Well, in the case of people with diabetes, despite being one of the risk groups indicated by the Ministry of Health, only 45.5% of the nearly 6,000,000 people affected by this pathology in our country are vaccinated against this infectious disease.
Additionally, for people with diabetes, the flu can lead to serious complications, such as insulin resistance, glycemic decompensations, even pneumonia and hospitalizations that are easily preventable through vaccination. Well, to alleviate this situation, experts believe that it is necessary improve the information available on the Internet about vaccination, thus fighting against vaccine hesitancy, especially among people with chronic diseases.
According to Fede, “people who suffer from this pathology have a 6 times greater risk of being hospitalized for flu; and 7 times more likely to develop pneumonia. Furthermore, we have just experienced the beneficial effects of vaccines with the Covid pandemic, which is why, at FEDE, we continue to reaffirm our commitment to recommending that people with diabetes be vaccinated against infectious diseases.”
Therefore, vaccination against this type of disease becomes completely vital and essential for patients with diabetes and other risk groups to preserve their health and quality of life as individuals within a society.
Protection, security and Artificial Intelligence
In this context, the Spanish Diabetes Federation (FEDE) has held the online meeting “Vaccine retinence and diabetes”, within the framework of its IMMUNIZATION 2023 campaign, which included Carlos Mateos, coordinator of the Institute #HealthWithoutBubbles and promoter of the initiative “Confidence in vaccination”, who commented that “the objective of this project is to promote the dissemination of vaccines, with the support of health professionals, creating useful, quality and effective information for patients; In addition to being essential, awareness campaigns are aimed specifically at chronic patients.”
This is an awareness and information initiative through which information resources about the benefits of vaccines will be shared on social networks, both for the group of people who suffer from diabetes and for those around them. A way, in turn, to eliminate the prejudices of talking about health online.
The Spanish Diabetes Federation (FEDE) has also taken advantage of the event to present the infographic “How to combat vaccine hesitancy in diabetes?” , carried out in collaboration with the #SaludSinBulos Institute, and in which patients, scientific societies and communication professionals can find useful advice to construct effective and quality messages about vaccination, especially aimed at patients with diabetes and other chronic pathologies.
And, finally, regarding the proposed measures, Carlos Mateos has highlighted that “emphasizing the protection and safety offered by vaccines, in addition to the use of artificial intelligence to locate hoaxes about vaccines are some keys to making messages more effective in this area.”
