Importance of Early Vaccination: Expert Advice on Respiratory Diseases and Pneumococcal Vaccines

Roberto Lima- Santa Maria de las Misiones

In anticipation of the cold that is expected in the coming days, Roberto Lima, head of immunizations at the Ministry of Health of Misiones, warned about the increase in respiratory diseases and the importance of early vaccination. He recommended being “prevented and getting vaccinated before the cold arrives.”

This year, the vaccines are available in advance, a fortune that is not always the case. “We have been with flu vaccines since March and for people at risk with pneumococcal vaccines,” he said. Then he added that “they are available in health operations, in the posts that we have in the squares and in the CAPS vaccination centers.”

Lima also recalled the combined scheme of the vaccine against the aforementioned pneumococcus. For people under 65 years of age, the first vaccination is pneumo 13, and one year after that vaccination, pneumo 23 should be applied. However, for those over 65 years of age, a booster dose of pneumo 23 is necessary every five years. “Nothing happens if the vaccination schemes are delayed, they are always continued, they are never started again,” he explained.

In addition, he encouraged people who go through a vaccination post to take advantage of the opportunity to get immunized, regardless of whether they have their vaccination card or not, stating that “it will always be subject to which vaccine I am applying. And also a little bit of knowledge today, the vaccination issue is very much on the agenda and people are quite well advised,” Lima clarified.

However, he mentioned that the only contraindication for the vaccine is having a fever, defining a fever as a temperature above 38 degrees. “Fever we are talking about a temperature above 38 degrees. Because precisely when my body has a fever, it is because it is defending itself, and it may be that the vaccine does not comply with the immunity process that I precisely want to achieve with vaccination.

In the same vein, he urged people to get the vaccine even if they have mild symptoms of a cold. “If I have a small allergy, if I have rhinitis, I have a little water in my nose, I still get vaccinated.” He then added that the inoculation takes approximately 15 days to create immunity in the body once applied.

In this way, he stressed the importance of having the vaccination schedule up to date. “That is why the recommendation is to maintain and keep the vaccination schedule up to date, always according to the suggestion of health personnel or human resources and who will be guiding you on how you have to do it,” she said. In case of doubt, he urged to approach a doctor or a vaccination post to obtain advice.
