According to Beeckman, the politicians are also stuck. They feel the despair just as well, but they don’t dare to make drastic choices. That is why, according to her, there is a need for a major social debate. “There must be a fundamental debate to determine the model from which we look at reality.”
It is precisely because that fundamental conversation is not taking place that there is this enormous amount of frustration and aggression on the part of citizens, she says. “There are no open plans to do anything about the impasse and that causes a lot of dissatisfaction. The result is that national politicians call it quits out of powerlessness.”
So a different idea of leadership is needed, Beeckman thinks. “You feel that the pragmatism of someone like Mark Rutte who is involved in putting out fires no longer works. People have a huge expectation that politics will solve everything. But whatever politicians do, it is always too little. never enough, but enough to get very angry about.”
