Seoul Viosys filed a patent lawsuit against FTHMM International BV, a Dutch trading company, in February 2022 in The Hague District Court to enforce an injunction against the sale of UV LED products infringing the patent. The asserted patent relates to Violeds technology, which uses ultraviolet light to effectively disinfect water, airspace and surfaces.

FTHMM has acknowledged infringement of Seoul Viosys’ patent in the court-approved cease and desist order and must cease sales of infringing UV LED products and destroy all such products. In addition, FTHMM must pay 500 euros per product for each case of non-compliance.

This lawsuit stems from an earlier patent lawsuit filed by Seoul Viosys in France against FNAC Darty Group, a major European retailer. The Paris court in September 2021 ordered the search and seizure of evidence of suspected violations. As a result of this confiscation, Seoul Viosys was informed that the UV LED products in question were being imported and distributed from the Netherlands.

Since the beginning of 2000, Seoul Viosys has co-developed and mass-produced the world’s first UV LED that emits UV light using optical semiconductor technology. The company also has state-of-the-art sterilization and cleaning technology used in household appliances, which has more than 5,000 patents.

“The proliferation of copycat products has increased significantly with the growth of the UV LED market,” said Young-joo Lee, CEO of Seoul Viosys. “Seoul Viosys’ patented technology is essential to the manufacture of UV LEDs, and Seoul Viosys will continue to enforce and protect its hard-earned patented technology around the world.”

Seoul Viosys, SETi and their strategic partners are actively pursuing their patent rights enforcement against patent infringers around the world. They have already won a series of permanent injunctions for patent infringement in the US and Europe against UV LED products from various LED manufacturers including RayVio, Everlight, Bolb, Epileds, LED Engin and SL Vionics (formerly Semicon Light). They will continue to enforce additional measures against some of these manufacturers.

About Seoul Viosys

Seoul Viosys is a one-stop supplier for UV-LED, VCSEL (Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser), the next-generation light source for 3D sensors and lasers, and a single-pixel RGB “micro clean pixel” for displays. Founded in 2002 as a subsidiary of Seoul Semiconductor, the company is a leader in the UV LED industry (LEDinside, 2019). Seoul Viosys has an extensive UV LED portfolio covering all wavelengths (200nm to 1600nm), including ultraviolet (UV) rays, visible rays and infrared rays.
