New Delhi: Congress Parliamentary Party leader Sonia Gandhi said that reservation for women in the Houses of Representatives was a dream of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and has not yet been fully implemented. The law should be implemented immediately. Along with Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, OBC women should also be given reservation by conducting a caste census. Sonia was talking about the start of discussion on the Women’s Reservation Bill in the Lok Sabha.
Rajiv Gandhi, my partner in life, was the first to try to determine the participation of women in local institutions. It failed in the Rajya Sabha by 7 votes. Later, the Congress government led by Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao passed it. Through it we got 15 lakh women leaders elected through local self-government bodies across the country. But Rajiv Gandhi’s dream was only half fulfilled. It will be complete with the passage of this bill.
But is it right to ask women to wait a few more years?
This is the most appropriate time to acknowledge and express gratitude for the contributions of women. Delaying the implementation of this bill is a grave injustice to Indian women.
The test of humanity can be passed only by recognizing the hard work, glory and sacrifice of women. Sonia said that in the struggle for freedom and the creation of a new India, women have fought shoulder to shoulder with men on all fronts.
