Implement Clean and Healthy Behavior (PHBS) to Face the Impact of Deteriorating Air Quality
Clean and Healthy Living Behavior (PHBS) has an important role in helping individuals and communities deal with the impact of declining air quality. This is because the reduction in air quality has the potential to have a serious impact on human health and the environment. According to the Clean and Healthy Behavior (PHBS) guidebook published by the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia, PHBS is a set of behaviors that are practiced on the basis of awareness as learning outcomes that make a person, family, group or community able to help themselves (independently) in the health sector. and play an active role in realizing public health.
Thus, PHBS includes many behaviors that must be practiced in order to achieve the highest degree of public health. PHBS includes all behaviors that must be practiced in the fields of disease prevention and control, environmental health, maternal and child health, family planning, nutrition, pharmacy and health care, including dealing with the impact of reduced air quality.
Clean and Healthy Living Behavior must be practiced wherever a person is so that the resulting benefits can be better and more optimal, especially in dealing with declining air quality. The following are 5 arrangements from PHBS, including:
1. PHBS in the Household
Decreasing air quality has an unfavorable impact on health, because it can cause respiratory problems, heart disease, cancer and so on. Efforts that we can do to deal with the impact of reduced air quality on health, one of which is by implementing PHBS in households. What can be done include not smoking, using clean water, washing hands with clean water and soap, doing physical activity every day, eating fruit and vegetables every day, using healthy latrines, eradicating larvae at home, giving babies exclusive breastfeeding, weighing babies and toddlers, deliveries assisted by health workers and so on.
Don’t forget to always use masks for people who are at risk, such as the elderly, toddlers, groups with special health conditions and when in locations with high levels of air pollution, such as highways and industrial areas.
2. PHBS in educational institutions
Decreasing air quality is not only bad for respiratory health, but can also hinder students in developing math and language skills. These findings were revealed in studies in China and the United States published in journals Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
As an effort to overcome the impact of decreasing air quality, practicing PHBS programs in schools is very important for students to implement in order to maintain health. The indicators of PHBS in educational institutions or schools include: not smoking in the school environment, washing hands with soap, regular and measured exercise, consuming healthy snacks, carrying out voluntary work, disposing of trash in its place, using clean and healthy toilets, eradicating larvae mosquitoes, avoid Narcotics, Alcohol, Psychotropics and other Addictive Substances (NAPZA).
3. PHBS in the Workplace
Deterioration of air quality is one of the causes of an unhealthy environment. Various efforts have been made to minimize the impact of decreasing air quality, one of which is by implementing PHBS in the workplace. PHBS indicators in the workplace setting are: not smoking, throwing garbage in the trash, washing hands with clean water and soap before eating and after defecating, regular exercise/physical activity, consumption of healthy food and drinks, drug-free (narcotics, Drugs, Psychotropics and other Addictive Substances), not spitting anywhere, using healthy latrines when urinating and defecating, eradicating mosquito larvae in the workplace, using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) according to the type of employee and so on.
4. PHBS in Public Places
In public places (places of worship, markets, shops, terminals, docks and others), the adoption of PHBS can help protect individuals from the impact of reduced air quality. Some PHBS practices that can be implemented in public places to deal with this are washing hands with soap, throwing garbage in the trash, not spitting anywhere, using masks, avoiding intensive physical activity outdoors, maintaining personal hygiene, maintaining diet. and healthy drinking, avoiding places exposed to high pollution, improving environmental hygiene, raising awareness, avoiding smoking in public places and others.
The adoption of PHBS in public places does not only involve individuals, but also requires support and awareness from the community as well as collaborative efforts to create a cleaner and healthier environment.
5. PHBS in Health Service Facilities
In health care facilities (clinics, health centers, hospitals and others), adopting PHBS can help reduce the impact of decreasing air quality and protect patients, staff and visitors from exposure to harmful air pollutants. PHBS practices that can be applied in health care facilities are by washing hands with soap, using healthy latrines, throwing trash in the trash, not smoking, not consuming drugs, not spitting anywhere, eradicating mosquito larvae.
Not only that, PHBS can also be carried out by improving effective air filtration systems, monitoring indoor air quality, good ventilation, managing air traffic, maintaining the cleanliness of service facilities, managing medical waste management, educating patients and visitors, promoting health, clean energy use and others. Implementing PHBS in health care facilities will help create a safe, clean and healthy environment for everyone who interacts with the facility.
PHBS tips for dealing with the impact of decreasing air quality
PHBS can play an important role in overcoming the impact of decreasing air quality. Decline in air quality has become an environmental problem that can have a serious impact on human health. Adopting PHBS practices can help individuals and communities reduce the risk of negative air quality impacts. Here are some ways PHBS can help overcome the impact of decreasing air quality:
a. Keep the environment clean: Reducing trash and waste around the environment can help reduce sources of air quality degradation. Avoiding burning garbage and plastic waste can also prevent the release of harmful substances into the air.
b. Use eco-friendly transportation: Suppressing the use of motorized vehicles that contribute to the reduction of air quality is an important step. Choosing to walk, cycle or use public transportation can help reduce vehicle exhaust emissions.
c. Always ready with personal protective equipment: wearing the right mask or respiratory protection when in an area with poor air quality can help protect the lungs and respiratory tract.
d. Reduce outdoor activity when air quality deteriorates: follow information about air quality and reduce outdoor activity when pollution levels are high can help avoid overexposure to harmful particles.
e. Increase awareness of self-care: PHBS such as keeping the body clean, washing hands properly, and keeping the immune system strong can help the body be more resistant to the negative effects of decreasing air quality. PHBS can also help increase public awareness about the importance of protecting clean air and reducing the negative impact of decreasing air quality.
So, healthy friends, PHBS does not only help reduce the impact of decreasing air quality on health, but also increases the body’s capacity to face environmental challenges. It is important to remember that PHBS must be integrated into daily lifestyles and society as a whole to create positive changes in dealing with the impacts of pollution and other environmental problems.
