NNA – A senior US State Department official told Reuters today that famine represents a danger and is “very likely” in at least some areas in northern Gaza, and that the scarcity of trucks represents a major obstacle to providing more humanitarian aid in the densely populated Strip, which is under siege. Israeli, according to Reuters.
The senior official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, “We can say with confidence that famine poses a great danger in the south and center, but it does not exist. However, in the north, it poses a danger and is very likely to exist in at least some areas, which explains the urgency that we have to do.” It transports goods and food on a large scale to the north.”
Earlier this month, a UN-backed global food security assessment warned that famine was imminent, likely to hit northern Gaza in May, and could spread throughout the Strip by July.
The Integrated Interim Classification of Food Security report stated that malnutrition and food insecurity may have exceeded famine levels in northern Gaza, and these levels are also likely to exceed death rates resulting from hunger.
The official said that the number of trucks distributing aid in southern and central Gaza exceeded approximately 200 trucks per day, which represents an increase compared to last month, but more are needed.
“The full nutritional needs of Gazans of all ages must be met,” he added. “This means more than just the minimum level of nutrition needed to survive.” He said that malnutrition and mortality among newborns and children is a major problem that is getting worse.
He went on to say, “This problem must be addressed by providing additional aid and entering the appropriate type of aid.”
