Impeachment Decision on Minister Lee Sang-min’s Removal from Office: Latest Updates and Verdict

Today (25th) a decision will be made on whether or not Minister of Public Administration and Security Lee Sang-min, who was impeached for responsibility for the Itaewon disaster, will be removed from office.

The Constitutional Court sentenced the impeachment judgment against Minister of Public Administration and Security Lee Sang-min at 2:00 pm today at the Constitutional Court Supreme Court Decision.

The presiding judge will be Judge Lee Jong-seok of the Constitutional Court, and the respondent, Minister Lee Sang-min, and the National Assembly Legislation and Judiciary Committee Chairman Kim Do-eup, who is a member of the impeachment prosecution, will not appear.

Some of the bereaved families of the Itaewon disaster will attend the trial at the Supreme Court and hold a press conference in front of the Constitutional Court immediately after the verdict.

This sentence comes 167 days after the National Assembly voted on the impeachment of Minister Lee.

Previously, on February 8, the National Assembly passed an impeachment motion against Minister Lee, taking responsibility for the poor response to the Itaewon disaster. Impeachment of a member of the State Council is the first time in constitutional history.

The issues in the impeachment adjudication of Minister Lee include ▲the duty to prevent disasters ▲appropriate post-disaster response measures ▲the duty to maintain diligence and dignity under the National Public Officials Act.

The Constitutional Court held four public arguments to listen to the arguments of the National Assembly and Minister Lee, and officials from the Ministry of Public Administration and Security, the National Police Agency, and the National Fire Agency and the bereaved families also made statements.

In order for the impeachment to be cited, at least 7 out of 9 Justices of the Constitutional Court must be present and at least 6 must vote in favor.

If the Constitutional Court upholds the impeachment motion of the National Assembly, Minister Lee will be immediately removed from office and banned from re-appointment to public office for five years in accordance with the Public Officials Act.

Conversely, if the impeachment motion is dismissed, Minister Lee will immediately return to work.
