Impact of Russian Attacks on Ukraine’s Energy Infrastructure: Minister Warns of Billion-Dollar Losses

The Minister of Energy of Ukraine, Herman Galushchenko, mentioned the impact of the large Russian attacks against the energy infrastructure of Ukraine in the past months.

“Today we are talking about a loss of more than a billion dollars. But the attacks continue and it is obvious that the damage will increase,” Ukrinform quoted Galushchenko as saying.

According to the minister, as a result of the large-scale attacks, the main damage was done to thermal and hydroelectric facilities, as well as the power transmission systems. At the same time, daily attacks against various types of energy facilities with drones, ballistic missiles or artillery continue, Galushchenko noted.

“Today the system is stable, but the situation is very complicated,” said the minister, noting that the warm weather is helping the situation.

Meanwhile, power restrictions are in place in some regions, especially Kharkiv, which are subject to daily Russian shelling.

Ukrainian energy officials have reported that Russian ballistic missile attacks have damaged half of Ukraine’s energy system.

The Chairman of the Board of Directors of “Ukrenergo” Volodymyr Kudrytsky noted that due to the extensive damage to the thermal and hydroelectric power plants, the shortage of electricity will be felt in the energy system of Ukraine throughout several months.
