Impact of Rainy Summer on Businesses and Tourism in Lower Saxony

Status: 09.08.2023 15:51

Weather in Lower Saxony – that means rain for weeks. What’s good for the aquifers is bad for everyone, who usually makes their biggest turnover in the summer. Or? It depends on.

by Marc Wichert

As is so often the case in life, some people are happy about what others are sad about: if it has been a rather rainy summer so far, the forest owners are satisfied, and because the large amount of water has somewhat alleviated the drought of recent years. The situation among farmers is not quite as clear: Grain farmers fear yield losses. On the other hand, those who grow corn or sugar beet should benefit. And how do outdoor pools, ice cream parlors, beach bars rate the relatively cool summer that is currently lacking in sunshine?

Ice cream parlors in malls are doing well

At the Giovanni L. ice cream parlor chain, with locations throughout northern Germany, the mid-term balance is quite positive. Marketing manager Mallhari Deshmukh told the NDR in Lower Saxony on request that many people would rather go to the covered shopping centers because of the weather. “Since many of our ice cream parlors can also be found there, we cannot complain about our sales figures.”

“Bad weather is taken into account”

The Strandleben bar on the Fährmannsinsel in Hanover is also optimistic. The half-time balance is quite okay: “We have less sales when it rains, but rainy days and lost days are taken into account,” said S-Projekt GmbH, which runs the beach life, the NDR. It was “everything is still in the green, but the August sun should slowly show itself and also shine in September”.

Roof terrace in Braunschweig also focuses on events

Nicolas Petrek from the Soldekk roof terrace in Braunschweig assesses the current situation somewhat differently: “Sales are noticeably lower than last year at the same time, which, in addition to the significantly worse weather, is also due to company events that are organized at significantly lower cost.” In addition, noticeably more people are on vacation again than last year, and more alternative events are taking place again. The roof terrace with its outdoor gastronomy is not making any losses at the moment, but the sales of the past four wet and cold weeks are up to 75 percent lower than in the same period last year, says Petrek. A compensation in winter is the roof terrace that has been converted into a Snodekk, on which a Christmas market then takes place. He also relies on a further expansion of the event branch as a second mainstay.

Losses of outdoor pools are compensated

The operators of outdoor pools are quite relaxed – usually the municipalities. Because if people don’t go to the outdoor pool because of the weather, they just go to the indoor pool, so the tenor. And the outdoor and indoor pools are mostly operated by the same provider. In this way, losses can be compensated.

In Osnabrück, people flock to the indoor pools

Stadtwerke Osnabrück, for example, is currently observing a very low number of guests in the Moscow pool. As a consequence, there have been shortened opening times in the outdoor pool for a few days and for a limited time, says spokesman Sebastian Philipp. “On the other hand, our two indoor pools are very well utilized. So sales are currently being generated more in the indoor pools and less in our outdoor pool.”

Also in Göttingen “everything is not so bad”

The situation is similar in Göttingen. “Anyone who doesn’t go to the outdoor pool comes to the Eiswiese bathing paradise,” says Ricardo Haas from Göttinger Sport und Freizeit GmbH. In July, 15,000 more visitors came to the covered swimming pool than in the same month last year. The two outdoor pools would have counted 10,000 fewer people together during this time. So “everything is not so bad,” says Haas.

Wolfsburg assumes that the number of visitors will increase

The city of Wolfsburg also does not want to spread any pessimism: “Our ‘regular swimmers’ remain loyal to us even when the weather is bad, so that we still have visits to each outdoor pool in the low three-digit range every day,” explains Monika Müller (SPD), head of the sports department. According to the current forecasts, the city also assumes that the weather will soon stabilize at a slightly sunnier level and that the number of visitors will then be slightly higher again.

Season in Hanover should be mixed

The same goes for the city of Hanover: “Summer isn’t over yet! There is definitely hope for an improvement in the weather,” says spokesman Udo Möller. There are “always good and bad seasons depending on the weather, and that’s as long as there are outdoor pools”. This year’s season is likely to be more of a mixed bag, but certainly not as bad as one would think at the moment, says Möller. After all, the beginning of summer was hot, which has probably been somewhat forgotten in the past few days due to the heavy rain.

Leinewelle in Hanover is happy: “We have a good wave every day”

And Heiko Heybey from the Leinewelle in Hanover is completely unimpressed. The facility with a standing wave for surfers and surfers has been open since April after years of planning and construction work – and is very well booked every day, says co-initiator Heybey. Surfers are used to cooler temperatures anyway, that’s what neoprene suits are for. In any case, the heavy rain is helpful. “We have a good wave every day.”
