Impact of Naturalized Players on the Indonesian National Team: Weakness or Strength?

Bola.net – The Indonesian national team is actually considered to be getting weaker with the increasing number of naturalized players. This was conveyed by former Vice President of the VFF (Vietnam Football Federation), Duong Vu Lam.

PSSI has naturalized players for the Indonesian National Team in recent years. Recently, this policy has focused only on players who have Indonesian blood from their parents or grandparents.

It is hoped that the naturalization policy will make the Indonesian National Team stronger. Moreover, some of the naturalized players are still young. So, they can defend the Indonesian National Team for quite a long time.

Duong Vu Lam has a different view. He admitted that the players who were naturalized by the Indonesian National Team had quality, but it actually made them weak. How did it happen? Check out the more complete review below Bolaneters.

Naturalization Makes Players Weak

FIFA does not prohibit the naturalization of players to defend the national team. However, in the Indonesian case, Duong Vu Lam felt that the presence of Marc Klok and his colleagues actually made the Garuda Squad weaker and less unified.

“Indonesian naturalized players have better technical skills and a higher tactical understanding, but on the contrary this seems to make them lose the national flag factor,” said Duong Vu Lam, quoted from Dantri.

“I see that Indonesia lately is playing more like a club that uses a lot of foreign players, rather than a true national team. I feel that naturalized players and local Indonesian players are not united,” he stressed.

Weak Points of the Indonesian National Team

Vietnam will meet Indonesia in the second match of Group D of the 2023 Asian Cup, Friday 19 January 2024. Duong Vu Lam thinks Vietnam will win. Because, he sees two things that are Indonesia’s weak points.

Indonesia’s first weakness is in the back line which is considered not tight enough. “At that time (against Iraq), every Iraqi attacker used his speed to attack forward and cut in front of the Indonesian defender,” he said.

“Another drawback is that when they lose the ball, the Indonesian players don’t actively fight for it, which is different from the spirit of the Indonesian team that I knew before,” he continued.
