Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – A study recently released a result which states that the body’s immunity to the corona virus can last for six months, or even years.
Reporting from CNN International, a research paper posted on biorxiv.org adds a focus on antibodies, or protein components of the immune system against the coronavirus. The results from the study suggest that immunity can be reduced in just a few months due to infection.
Researchers from the La Jolla Institute for Immunology, University of California, San Diego, and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai analyzed blood samples collected from 185 adults, ages 19 to 81, in the United States who had recovered from Covid-19. . The collections were carried out when their bodies were infected and caused symptoms and some were collected over six months later. .
In the blood samples, the researchers examined components of immune memory. They found that the antibodies were “long lasting” with only “slight reductions” occurring at six to eight months, but noted that there was a 200-fold range in antibody reaction rates among adults. This means that the body is still trying to fight the virus.
The researchers also found that memory B cells were detectable in nearly all Covid-19 cases, and there appears to be an increase in memory B cells over time. “B cell memory for several other infections has been observed to be long-lived, including 60+ years after smallpox vaccination, or 90+ years after influenza infection,” write the investigators in their study.
Lawrence Young, professor of molecular oncology at the University of Warwick, revealed that this study is important for assessing the ability of various humans to fight viruses.
“This variation may be due to some people having very low rates of asymptomatic infection. It might be expected that previously infected people with a low immune memory response would be susceptible to reinfection with SARS-CoV-2,” Young said.
So far there are seven types of corona viruses that can infect humans and the SARS-CoV-2 virus that caused the current Covid-19 pandemic is one of them. However, in-depth research into other viruses is not carried out comprehensively because they are not deadly.
