Immigrants travel to Washington DC for immigration reform

A group of immigrants and activists left early Tuesday for the nation’s capital to pressure Democratic senators for immigration reform.

“This morning, hundreds of our members boarded buses to Washington DC to demand that Congress fulfill its promise to invest in our communities before the holidays,” reads in part a message on social media from the Make the Road NY organization.

It happens that there are key moments now in Washington on the immigration issue since the Democrats in the Senate are about to decide that they include in a budget project that could be approved only with the votes of the Democratic senators, that is, they cannot block it the Republicans.

One of the proposals is to include the immigration issue in such a project. In part this will depend on what a senate official – the ‘parliamentarian’ – decides on whether the immigration issue fits into a budget bill. In recent months, this office has rejected two initial immigration proposals presented to it by Democrats.

Activists and immigrants demand that regardless of what the “parliamentarian” says, the Democrats – led by their senatorial leader Chuck Schumer – include the immigration issue in the budget package.

And that they not only include it, but also have among its contents a path to citizenship for millions of unauthorized immigrants who have been in the country for years.

Groups similar to the one in New York City have also traveled by bus to Washington DC from elsewhere such as Westchester and Long Island.
