Sub-zero temperatures hitting New York City have made newly arrived migrants ill, a group of them waiting for an available room outside the Watson Hotel, now a shelter.

Many of the shelters in the city have reached capacity and others have become unsafe, these migrants say. Gerard, who arrived from Colombia, could not stand the cold and ended up in hospital.

Onset of hypothermia, influenza, Covid and influenza are among other diseases they suffer from and it is difficult for them to access medical care and medicines.

His last alternative was to seek refuge on the trains. The situation some faced was unexpected.

New York City’s mayor said he provides shelter to anyone who asks for it and has contracted the services of at least 60 hotels to support the city’s already full shelters. New York State is required by law to comply with this rule.
