immigrants must return coronavirus check

  • Immigrants with a J-1 visa must return the coronavirus check
  • IRS issued a warning to those immigrants
  • By mistake they received the deposit from the IRS

J-1 visa immigrants who have received payment from the Trump government coronavirus check must return it immediately, if they do not want to see their migratory status.

According to information published by the newspaper The opinion, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is requesting the holders of these visas to return the money that was deposited as part of the Economic Impact Payment, which the Trump government authorized to lessen the effects of the coronavirus in the economy.

The IRS deposited thousands of immigrants J-1 visa holders mistakenly check the coronavirus, because they were not eligible for the aid as they were not US citizens or residents.

The mistake occurred when the same J-1 visa immigrants declared their taxes as if they were US residents, many of them perhaps using tools like TurboTax.

That caused the IRS to take them as legal residents of the United States. and therefore eligible for coronavirus checks.

However, realizing this error, the IRS quickly released a warning on its website: “They must return the payment.”

According to the IrishCentral site, cashing coronavirus checks could affect any future attempt to enter the U.S. for J-1 visa holders.

The $ 1,200 payment was sent to large numbers of J-1 visa exchange students in April, with no explanation or warning that cashing the check could result in fines, penalties, or potential visa problems in the future.

Any J-1 visa holder who has filed a tax return for 2018 or 2019 may receive the payment and Taxback.com, a company that files tax returns on behalf of J-1 students, warned that cashing the check could give place to considerable problems.

“By keeping a payment to which they are not entitled, a J-1 participant may incur fines or penalties or jeopardize their future United States visa applications,” said Mark Corcoran of Taxback.com.

But those who received the payment in error not only have to return it, they have to resubmit their amended tax return.

“Return the payment and make a corrected tax return. The IRS receives thousands of corrected returns each year and the process of filing a corrected return is relatively straightforward, ”said Laura McHugh of Taxback.com.

The IRS has published the process to return the coronavirus check money on its website, for which it gives two options.

The first is for those who received payment through a paper check.

The recipient must write “Voided” in the endorsement section on the back of the check and then send the voided check from the Treasury immediately to the appropriate IRS location listed here.
