Immigrant stories: A. Galeana, bicycle decorator

With colored ribbons and different postcards, Adelaido Galeana brings to life the bicycles of delivery men in New York.

Galena has been covering bicycles at home with plastic tape for 18 years. Last year she added another decoration to this means of transport: she covers the batteries with postcards of cultural images.

“The Virgin of Guadalupe, San Judas, Flag of Mexico, of Guatemala,” explained Galeana.

Galeana created a Facebook account last year and began sharing photos and videos of her work.

His clientele grew and went from covering two bicycles a week to fifteen. He says that lining them helps the bicycle paint not to be damaged.

“Nothing happens to the plastic, the bicycle falls and nothing happens to the bicycle,” said Galeana.

The materials for his work come from his native Guerrero, in Mexico, where he has not been able to return for many years due to his immigration status.

“No, because my dad is waiting for me in Mexico”

Adelaido has lined a thousand bikes since last year.

It takes him two hours to finish each job, but he says that the happiness of seeing a bicycle decorated by him on the street is priceless.

“I feel very happy that I did this job and when they pass by they see me and say ‘oh Adelaido’ and greet me”.

For now, Adelaido prefers to continue working independently so that she can spend more time with her children.

“Take him to school for five days, and on Sunday afternoons I go out with them,” said Galeana.
