New York, Dec 14 (EFE).- Families without legal status in the United States, who arrived in New York in recent months on buses sent from Texas, will be able to benefit from a new childcare assistance program, the mayor, Eric Adams, announced Wednesday.

He noted that it is the first time in New York history that this aid will be given to families who, due to their legal status, do not meet the requirements for another federally subsidized child care program.

The city is investing $10 million in this new program, which it’s calling the “New York Promise,” and has contracted with four community organizations to deliver the services because of their ties and trusted relationships with immigrants, he said Adams.

Earlier this year, when Adams took office, he announced plans to improve access to subsidized child care for children in irregular status and others who cannot access existing programs due to restrictive federal immigration rules.

He stressed that this initiative will be particularly beneficial to newly arrived asylum seekers in New York, as it will allow them to seek stable housing and paid employment while their children are cared for in safety.

The city estimates that about 600 children will benefit from the program in the first six months of the initiative.

“All children deserve the opportunity to succeed, no matter where they come from, and as a city of immigrants, we know the American dream begins here, in this city,” the Democratic mayor said.

“Overcoming obstacles in a new city and a new country is difficult, and the combination of these problems with a lack of childcare can prevent parents and families from realizing the dream they had so desperately set for,” she said. said the mayor.

Some 30,000 immigrants have arrived in this city since last March, most sent by bus from Texas by its governor Greg Abbott after crossing the border seeking asylum in this country, mostly from Venezuela. EFE extension
