After the deadlines indicated in the measure imposed by Mayor Eric Adams had expired, immigrant families began to be evicted from shelters and hotels set up as shelters in New York City.
Our reporter Joaquín Torres, from Univision 41, went to the headquarters of the Row Hotel, in Manhattan, and found that nearly 40 families began to leave, in the midst of the heavy rains that are currently hitting the tri-state area.
Some had been living under the care of the city for months and now have to rent an apartment, as is the case of Mayra Martínez, of Venezuelan origin. “Grateful, because we were able to rent an apartment. I’ve been here for a year and it’s time for it to be over,” she said.
However, other immigrants who have the same amount of time need to apply for another shelter. “I don’t know what I’m going to do, drift,” said Jonathan Paredes. He pointed out that he and his family have nowhere to stay, and that in the face of heavy downpours, only God is in control.
Nearly 4,800 immigrant families are notified to leave shelters
At the beginning of 2024, nearly 4,800 families began to be notified: time had expired.
Authorities stressed that there will be exceptions for those who can prove medical needs. However, some immigrants point out that they are not being fulfilled.
New York City is currently home to more than 75,000 immigrants and about 10,000 continue to arrive each month.
Manuel Castro, commissioner of the Office of Migrant Affairs, requested the collaboration of those in the shelters to give space to the new arrivals.
“We ask you to support us, those who have been in the shelters and hotels for more than a year,” he said.
For his part, the City Comptroller, Brad Lander, stated that he will begin an investigation regarding the protocols of this policy of evicting migrant families after 60 days.
Since spring 2022, more than 165,000 immigrants have taken refuge in the Big Apple.
