Immersive Exhibition: Marc Chagall’s Artistic Journey at Atelier des Lumières

At the Atelier des Lumières

This digital exhibition unpublished presents all of the work of Marc Chagall (1887-1985) at the crossroads of the artistic and cultural novelties of his century and in constant renewal.

Paris and New York represent two crucial stages in its long trajectory. Paris was his city of choice, offering, thanks to the avant-gardes of the 1910s, a breeding ground for experimental research to the young painter of Russian origin, who nourished them with his own cultural references. New York was first and foremost a place of exile in the difficult 1940s which, however, gave new impetus to his creativity. After the war, several exhibitions and major artistic commissions would still forge links between Paris and New York, reminiscent of Chagall in the United States until the 1970s.

During this immersive exhibition, all the themes that make up the artist’s imagination will parade on the walls of the workshop of lights, like intertwined cutouts. They will be punctuated with extracts of classical music, klezmer or jazz. His fantastic bestiary, just like the marvelous characters from the circus, fables or opera, but also biblical episodes and references to Russian culture, poetically translate the rich personal experience of the artist. Witness to the great events of the 20th century, Chagall thus makes his art his first instrument of commitment, peace and hope.
