Good first for Camila Giorgi and Elisabetta Cocciaretto in the “Merida Open Akron” (WTA 250 – prize pool 259,303 dollars) underway on the concrete of the capital of the federal state of Yucatàn, in Mexico.
The 31-year-old from Macerata, No. 68 in the ranking – the American Sloane Stephens (No. 41 WTA) entered the draw area of the second seeded and former world top ten player in the last quarter – eliminated for 64 62, in just over an hour and a quarter of the gamel’egiziana Mayar Sherif, #53 WTA and sixth seeding favorite, never faced before in her career. First set decided by a break in the tenth game, with the 26-year-old from Cairo who had already saved herself in the sixth: in the second half Camila ahead 2-0 let herself be caught again but then won all the last four games.
In the second round Giorgi will have to contend with the Spanish Nuria Parrizas Diaz, n.79 of the ranking: also in this case there are no precedents.
