GEOSIAR.COM – Immediately be aware of some signs of children who have diabetes. Diabetes is a dangerous disease that can cause complications and can affect anyone, including children.
In children, the signs of type 1 and type 2 diabetes usually have similarities but are not very clear. However, according to the CDC, type 1 diabetes can develop quickly (within weeks or months) and can become serious.
On the other hand, type 2 diabetes tends to develop slowly over time, and some children show no symptoms at all. Therefore, type 2 diabetes is often diagnosed when seeing a doctor or other health care professional.
“Indeed, the general indicators of diabetes are identical to those of childhood in general. So, the symptoms are often ignored, “said a professor of nutrition at New York University, Maya Feller.
However, if it turns out that your child has diabetes (type 1 or type 2), parents need not worry too much, because there are several signs that you should be aware of immediately.
- Changes in Eating and Sleeping Habits
According to the American Diabetes Association, people with diabetes tend to drink more water than usual. Health conditions can make a child very thirsty or hungry no matter how much the child eats.
It can also occur in children which may be followed by sleep changes such as difficulty falling asleep at night.
High blood sugar can make the lens of the eye swell and make vision blurry. As a result, your child’s vision may become unbalanced and he may not be able to focus clearly.
- Slow Healing Wounds
If your child has sores, or has an infection that lasts longer, it could be a sign of type 2 diabetes. As a parent, you might think it’s due to factors like high blood sugar, neuropathy, diabetes, reduced circulation.
A higher frequency of infection is also more common in people with diabetes.
- Certain Skin Areas Look Dark
Diabetics may experience darkening of skin wrinkles such as underarms and neck area. This condition, called acanthosis nigricans, sometimes looks like a bruise and sometimes looks like it has a velvety texture.
Weight changes often occur before a diabetes diagnosis, especially significant weight loss. The Mayo Clinic says irregular weight loss or gain is a potential symptom of diabetes.
The frequency with which children go to the bathroom to urinate can be a cause for concern as it is directly related to a sharp increase in water intake.
For example, if your child is urinating more frequently, at least every 15 minutes, it could be a sign that your child has type 1 diabetes. These warning signs are enough for the child to get further treatment in the hospital.
Extreme fatigue and changes in energy levels are warning signs of diabetes, especially if your child is feeling slower than usual.
“In terms of diabetes symptoms, children can actually be similar to adults,” said Feller.
“So, we may notice that there is a bit more lethargy and the child looks tired or they may have an increase and decrease in their energy level.”
According to the CDC, people with diabetes can also experience nausea, vomiting, or abdominal pain. In children, these gastrointestinal symptoms tend to be more common in type 1 diabetes.
Well, those are some signs of having type 1 and type 2 diabetes
