What makes the hallmark of Place Stanislas are the golden railings. We see them on all buildings, and real “golden doors” lead to the Square. These grids are the work of Jean L’amour, “serrurier” of King Stanislas. A locksmith, at the time he was a blacksmith. This year 2021 is also celebrating the 250th anniversary of the death of Jean L’amour.
These grids accumulate symbols linked to France. We see the fleur-de-lis of the monarchy, the sun, the Sun King, and what holds the lampposts are Gallic roosters. They also adorn the two fountains of the Square, dedicated to Neptune, god of the sea, for one, and to Amphitrite, goddess of water for the other.
