The Mercedes-Benz SL-Class will offer a design mix of the 80s and 90s, but it was produced until 2001. This one is from the end of production and has spent most of its twenty-three years in the world hidden away in a garage. Its condition is absolutely perfect.
When you think of the 1990s, one person thinks of the wildness of the transformation of the Czech lands to capitalism, while another thinks of colorful design or the first mobile phones. But the car fan remembers the “iron” – the Mercedes-Benz SL class of the R129 generation. With its arrival on the market in 1989, it is truly a symbol of the early ’90s, but the shapes combining the angularity of the 80s and the beginning curves of the emerging 90s are still attractive today.
It was produced for 12 long years and over 213,000 pieces were produced during that time, so it’s not such a rarity. But perhaps that is why the opportunity to meet a truly beautiful piece for sale is relatively rare today. And it’s opening at the dealer right now Speedärt Motorsports.
The latter has a version of the SL 500 produced in 2000, relatively common compared to AMG variants powered by seven-liter twelve-cylinders. But it still means a 306hp five-liter V8, specifically the M113 engine, which is no reason to turn your nose up at. It manages a speed of 100 kilometers in 6.5 seconds and continues to an electronically limited maximum of 250 km/h.
The attractiveness of this piece, however, does not lie in the design or motorization, but in its perfect condition. In the photos, it looks like a time machine, as if we moved to the year 2000 and this car just left the showroom polished. According to the seller, the paintwork is free of any imperfections, the interior is like new, the mica windows in the canvas roof, which not only on the R129 suffer from age and sun, look flawless and all electronic systems work.
The reason is simple – it only drove less than 2,700 kilometers in its lifetime. As new, it went to a garage in New York state and in 22 years there it has driven only 1,754 km. In June 2022, it moved to a collector in Miami, Florida, who added another nine hundred kilometers and is now selling the car.
The equipment is also perfect, not counting the Nappa leather and walnut wood trim. The first owner ordered the SL1 and SL2 extra packages for the car, which include AMG bumpers and sills, projector front fog lamps, 18″ Monoblock design wheels, xenon headlights, heated seats and a Bose audio system with an integrated CD changer.
The car comes with the original hardtop, owner’s manual, service book, window leaflet showing price, equipment and consumption, as well as the original tool kit, all of which increase its value to collectors. However, given the state of the market for interesting used cars, this one is not cheap at all – it will cost 78 thousand dollars, i.e. roughly 1.8 million crowns.
