Imelda Marcos: corrupt to the very core | Movie

entertainment">After seeing the documentary film The kingmaker (2019) you think: it’s just about those shoes. Award-winning American documentary maker Lauren Greenfield follows the former first lady, now in her 90’s, as she has returned from exile to the Philippines. Imelda, still dressed in tip-top style and constantly surrounded by two caretakers who keep her make-up and clothes tidy, presents herself as very committed to her country. “I was a mother to the people,” it says repeatedly. The fact that she participates in the film says enough about her total lack of self-reflection.

Gaddafi and Hussein as friends

entertainment">Gradually, Greenfield portrays more and more opinions – from journalists, the opposition – that prove the absolute opposite. Imelda is not really helping herself by claiming that Gaddafi, Saddam Hussein and Mao Tse Tung were her best friends. Or proud to show the Picasso, Michelangelo and Monet that she has on the wall in her luxury apartment in Manila. Without a trace of emotion, she complains about her “bad treatment.” Corrupt and decadent to the very core; they lived like king and queen and stole billions from the treasury.

entertainment">Everything she wanted was for sale. Even a boatload of giraffes, zebras and other wild animals from Kenya. But where do you leave it? On one of the many islands in the Philippines, of course. The 250 families who lived there had to leave ‘mother’. The animals are now undergoing inbreeding.

entertainment">Worse than the shameless self-enrichment at the expense of the population is the effortless, casual way in which she and her son Bongbong, who in 2016 make a bid for vice president, the crimes against the population and corruption of Ferdinand Marcos (he died in 1989 ) deny or justify. “Perception is real and the truth is not,” she says without a shadow of a doubt.

Duterte

entertainment">In fact, mother and son appear to be hard at work to restore the Marcos dynasty, supported by current president Rodrigo Duterte, not averse to any violence against his people. He even gives dictator Marcos a hero’s funeral 30 years after his death.

entertainment">Now every nation gets the government it deserves, goes the saying The kingmaker you can see the disaster unfolding before your eyes. The word ‘shocking’ was invented for this.
