Imants Ziedonis Museum is looking for modern Krišjānis Barons

This year, in honor of the 185th anniversary of Krišjānis Barons, at the invitation of the K.Barons Museum, the Imants Ziedonis Museum has started the project “Ziedonis Museum on the Way with the Baron”. One of the most important events in the project is the re-launch of K.Barona’s road from Tartu to Dundaga, therefore the Ziedonis Museum is looking for creative people who would like to be modern Krišjānis Baroni and perform one of the stages of this road.

Inspired by the geography book “Description of Our Homeland and some appendices briefly received” written by K. Baron and the march made by K. Baron through the territory of modern Latvia and Estonia in 1859, a hiking route from Tartu (Estonia) to the city of Kurzeme has been created for more than 700 kilometers. Dundaga. In order for pedestrians to be able to take this historical route today, the museum team has studied 19th century maps, K.Baron’s memories of this march, and together with the map publishing house “Jāņa sēta” a modern route map has been created, informs Ziedonis Museum representative Kristiāna Salnāja.

“By actualizing the contribution of Krišjānis Barons’ personality to the formation of Latvian identity, our goal is to follow this path and create a cultural-historical, cultural-rich hiking route. We invite people to apply to perform one of the sections of the road and at the same time tell about the nature of Estonia and Latvia, people, places nowadays, ”says Žanete Grende, the head of the Ziedonis Museum.

The team of the Ziedonis Museum has experience in organizing marches with a large number of people, but this time it is planned that the pedestrians will perform one by one or in pairs. Each modern Baron will have several tasks – to find his special places on the way, to observe nature, to immortalize the way in photographs and to create a short description of the part of his way. Some of the modern Barons have already been chosen – Renārs Kaupers will be one of the first modern Barons to make his way to Estonia. In honor of the 150th anniversary of the confectionery manufacturer Laima, the chairman of Orkla Latvija Toms Didrihsons will also complete one leg of the journey. Julgī Stalte from Liv, Ilze Salnāja-Verva, the head of the Tartu Latvian Society, the team of the bank “Blue Orange” and the writer Laima Kota with her husband, Turkish poet Ahmet Kota, have already chosen their stage.

The procession will start on August 21 from the History Museum of the University of Tartu and will end on September 20 at Dundaga Castle. Until July 19, an application form to become a modern Baron is available on the Ziedonis Museum website. Each modern Baron will travel five to 40 kilometers. At the end of the march, the contemporary Latvian and Estonian cultural landscape will be captured through the eyes of modern Barons, thus honoring Krišjānis Barons and his contribution to Latvian culture.

Within the cycle of cultural events “Ziedonis Museum on the way to the Baron”, several events involving the society are planned until K. Baron’s birthday at the end of October, according to K. Salnāja. All the planned cultural events can be implemented thanks to the support of the bank “Blue Orange”. You can follow the activities of the project “Ziedonis Museum on the way with the Baron” on the Ziedonis Museum website ziedonamuzejs.lv and on the social networks “Facebook” and “Instagram”.
