Imane Helif became one of the most commented athletes at the last weekend’s Olympic Games in Paris. The boxer, who is banned from women’s competition by the International Boxing Association, made it to the top in the French capital and, despite all the criticism, walked away with a gold medal.
However, it is clearly not enough satisfaction for the Algerian woman, who explained that she was the victim of terrible harassment because of doubts about whether she was a man or a woman. After the sports forum ended, she and her team of lawyers rushed to file a complaint in court.
And a few days later, the names of some of the people who seriously offended her became clear.
An important detail is that the lawsuit was brought against the social network X, owned by Elon Musk. His name, along with those of Donald Trump and “Harry Potter” author JK Rowling, appear in the filings as people who became part of the online harassment against Imane Helif. But the fact that they are famous and rich makes us wonder what her main motivation is to confront them.
Certainly on the one hand is her “struggle for justice, dignity and honor”, but for alleged “acts of aggravated cyberbullying” French laws provide not only several years in prison, but also large monetary penalties. For cyberbullying, they are between 30 and 50 thousand euros, and for hate speech they reach up to 230 thousand euros.
And here’s a little background on how this case came to be.
Already after Imane Helif’s first match with Italy’s Angela Carini, which lasted less than a minute, Rowling posted on her X profile that the Algerian was a “man” who “enjoys the pain of a woman he just hit with punch to the head’.
Elon Musk shared on his profile the publication of the swimmer Riley Gaines, who claimed that “men are not in women’s sports”, agreeing with her words.
Donald Trump, who is campaigning, also intervened in the discussion and wrote: “I will keep men away from women’s sports”, along with a photo of Heliffe’s fight with Carini, recalls the Daily Mail.
