“I do not know where to start. A year ago, if someone had told me what was going to happen, I don’t think they would have believed it. I have no idea how Joseph will be able to understand what we all went through”.
The words are from Sally Smith, aunt of Joseph Flavill, a 19 year old British boy who woke up from a 10 month coma and who is now slowly regaining consciousness after being hit by a car on March 1, while walking through the streets of Burton, three weeks before the first confinement in the United Kingdom was decreed.
Joseph know nothing about the pandemic, let alone that was infected twice by covid-19 while hospitalized in Leicester, totally unconscious from the brain injury caused by the accident.
The family, tells “The Guardian”, tried to explain to him by video call that she could not be with him personally due to restrictions, but was unable to reveal the true scale of a nightmare to which Joseph has not yet awakened and which forces society to remain in isolation.
“We talked about it over the phone and tried to explain to him that we really want to hold his hands, but we can’t do it,” reports the aunt.
The young man continues his recovery and is already able to move his limbs, answer simple questions by blinking his eyes, at a time when his smiles bring the family to tears.
