At the border crossing at Voehledar, just outside the town of Mykilske in the Donbas region, the Ukrainian army has laid several mines at the crossroads. Ukrainian troops are waiting nearby to strike with anti-tank guided missiles. That is what various media say.

More than a dozen tanks and combat vehicles have already been destroyed in and around the area, but Russian troops continue to try to enter Voehledar. Ukrainian officers claim that Russia has already lost more than 130 tanks in the three weeks of fighting in that region. They describe it as “the largest tank battle of the war so far”. However, these figures cannot be independently verified.

Drone footage from the Ukrainian army circulating on social media shows Russian vehicles being destroyed at the border crossing. The most recent video shows a Russian BMP-2 IFV being destroyed at the intersection after running over a mine and being hit by an anti-tank guided missile. Another video shows how a Russian T-72B3 tank and BMP-2 are destroyed by a mine and an anti-tank missile.

Bloody winter offensive

The Ukrainian mining town of Voehledar has been a target for Russian troops in their bloody winter offensive. There has been fighting in the eastern Ukrainian city and surrounding villages, while Russia has made several failed attempts to take the city.

Russia’s unexpected use of mines seems to give Ukraine the upper hand in the fighting in eastern Ukraine. In addition to the traditional Soviet mines, Ukraine also uses US-supplied remote anti-weapon mines, which fire a grenade over an open area that disperses small mines widely.
