Images: lava flows from notorious volcano Congo | Abroad

The Nyiragongo volcano, about 6 miles north of Goma, erupted on Saturday evening. Thousands of people fled. 5,000 to 7,000 people have sought refuge in nearby Rwanda. Although it is not yet clear whether the situation has stabilized, the first people returned on Sunday morning.

The lava flow has not reached Goma airport or the city limits, but it has reached the surrounding villages. Several homes have been destroyed. It’s not clear how much damage the volcanic eruption did. It is also not known whether there were injuries or deaths. Panic can be seen on social media images of bystanders after the volcano erupts.

Nyiragongo is one of the most active volcanoes in the world and is considered one of the most dangerous. The previous eruption in 2002 in Congo, Central Africa, killed more than 100 people and left 120,000 people homeless. The deadliest eruption was in 1977, when more than 600 people died.
