Between 1965 and 1988, 464 Karosa ŠM11 buses ran in Brno, but they did not have a long endurance.
The Transport Company of the City of Brno (DPMB) has expanded its collection of historic vehicles with the Karosa ŠM11 bus. The company has been striving for a red-beige car for several years, and now it can be included in its 14 existing historic vehicles.
“We planned to purchase the bus for last year’s 90th anniversary of bus transport in Brno, unfortunately the entire purchase and repairs were delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic,” said DPMB CEO Miloš Havránek. The bus is after renovation, the transport company paid five million for it.

Buses of this type were carried by passengers in the 1960s and 1980s; these were the first buses in Brno’s public transport with an automatic transmission. Between 1965 and 1988, 464 Karosa ŠM11 buses ran in Brno. “So there are a lot of people among us who remember them,” added Havránek. According to him, however, these buses did not have a long service life, after five or six years they had to be replaced or overhauled. They produced less than 10,000 ŠM11 cars in Karos Vysoké Mýto.
The bus was acquired by DPMB through an intermediary from Slovakia. Although the car did not drive in Brno, it obtained the registration number 2740, which had the first bus of this type delivered to the South Moravian metropolis. It will be on display during the Days of Traffic Nostalgia, open days in the DPMB premises and other promotional events. It will also be possible to rent the bus.
According to Havránek, another goal of DPMB in terms of the collection of historic vehicles is the Ikarus bus. He drove passengers in Brno from 1980 to 2001.
