Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – A recent study showed that the combination of AstraZeneca and Pfizer vaccines was able to increase levels of neutralizing antibodies by six times compared to two doses of AstraZeneca.

Citing Reuters, Monday (26/7/2021) this study was conducted by researchers in South Korea (South Korea). In the release of the study results, the efficacy of the vaccine will increase when patients are injected with AstraZeneca vaccine at the first dose and receive Pfizer vaccine at the second dose.

In the study, 499 medical workers were involved with 100 receiving mixed doses, 200 receiving two doses of Pfizer injections and the rest receiving two AstraZeneca injections.

“All showed neutralizing antibodies, which prevent the virus from entering cells and replicating, and the results from the vaccine mix showed similar amounts of neutralizing antibodies were found from the group that received the two Pfizer injections,” the study, carried out by the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA), said.

Previously, a study in the UK last month showed similar results. The study found that injections of AstraZeneca followed by Pfizer produced the best T cell response, and higher antibody responses than Pfizer followed by AstraZeneca.

The idea for this mixture was considered by the French Drug Authority (HAS) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) in April. This is because some AstraZeneca injection recipients were found to have very unusual blood clots after the first vaccination. This incident led several countries to suspend its use as a precautionary measure.

Meanwhile Germany became the first European country to recommend that the category of people aged 60 years and under who had received the AstraZeneca injection in the first dose should receive a different product for their second dose.
