Monday’s duel of the football qualification of the World Cup 2022 Guinea – Morocco had to be postponed. The reason is that a coup is currently taking place in a West African country.

Moroccan players arrived in the country and got stuck in a hotel at the venue of the match in the capital Conakry. “We’re at the hotel and we’ve heard gunfire all day. We’re waiting for permission to move to the airport. The plane is waiting for us, the journey takes 45-60 minutes, but we can’t go right now,” informed Moroccan coach Vahid Halilhodžič for L’Equipe.

The hotel where the Moroccans are stranded is located opposite the Presidential Palace in Conakry. The coup in the country is led by the military, which allegedly detained President Alpha Condé and occupied the government district.

“The players are worried, of course. I can do it better. I’m used to things like that, I lived in Bosnia. We have to wait and see how it develops. We hope to return to Morocco before dark.” The situation was reassured by a 68-year-old coach, best known as a former Algerian coach, with whom he advanced to the eighth finals at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
