An Oakland County District Court judge has been ousted from her position amid a discrimination scandal. Recordings of the judge were revealed in which he used homophobic and racist expressions.
Oakland County Judge Kathleen Ryan was dismissed at the end of August due to misconduct. Administrative officer working in the court Edward Hutton tells the local media that he has recorded Ryan’s speeches for years and passed the recordings on.
– I just want to do the right thing. I want to keep my job and do it in peace, Hutton says to the Detroit media WXYZ.
– I want the people of Oakland County who come to court to have a fair hearing and to have their cases dealt with by an impartial judge.
Ryan handles cases involving wills, estates, custody disputes and Michigan state mental health laws in Oakland court.
In the audio tapes recorded by Hutton, Ryan uses a derogatory term about the county’s highest official David Coulteristawho is openly homosexual. On the tapes, Ryan also calls black people living in the United States lazy.
– I am not systematically racist. I’m the new racist, Ryan says on the recordings.
– If you are black and from another country, you will do much better. If you’re American black, you’re a fucking lazy piece of shit, Ryan says on another tape.
According to Hutton, Ryan has been calling her both during and outside of work hours for several years. In the calls, Ryan has said “really inappropriate things”, according to Hutton, and at some point Hutton started recording the calls.
– I don’t think that anyone who has so much hatred in their heart towards certain groups of people can make fair and unbiased decisions, Hutton says.
Hutton tells WXYZ he sent the tapes to Coulter, the Michigan Supreme Court and other officials. Ryan has been sidelined for now pending an investigation.
According to WXYZ, Ryan was arrested in 2021 on suspicion of domestic violence, but the charges were later dropped.
