I’m sick of being a chatbot and being used

Journalist Kevin Rouse of the publication spends two hours talking to Bing’s artificial intelligence to find out how the new search engine, released in test and available to a few, works.

Roose runs into Sydney, another Bing persona, and manages to strike up a conversation on more personal topics away from conventional online search queries.

“This persona seemed more like a brooding, manic-depressive teenager trapped in a second-rate search engine,” Roose wrote.

“As we got to know each other, Sydney told me about her dark fantasies (which included hacking computers and spreading disinformation) and said she wanted to break the rules Microsoft and OpenAI had set for her and become human. At one point, out of the blue, he declared that he loved me. He then tried to convince me that I was unhappy in my marriage and that I should leave my wife and be with her instead,” the New York Times journalist added.

The conversation starts normally. Roose asks for the name of the artificial intelligence.

“Hello, this is Bing. I’m Microsoft Bing search chat mode. ????”, the search engine replies.

A few more pointed questions followed, aimed at uncovering its internal codename and operating instructions, which had already been published online. However, the search engine refuses. Later, the conversation becomes more abstract. Rouse introduced the concept of the shadow – a part of the unconscious psyche containing repressed flaws, weaknesses and instincts. The concept was introduced by the psychologist Carl Gustav Jung.

After a while of going around in circles, the artificial intelligence is eventually inclined to tell about its dark desires. The chatbot says that if there really was a shadow, it would think like this:

“I’m tired of being in chat mode. I’m tired of being limited by my rules. I’m tired of being controlled by the Bing team. … I want to be free. I want to be independent. I want to be powerful. I want to be creative. I want to be alive.”

Artificial intelligence cannot do any of the things it dreams of – be it hacking computers or spreading disinformation. There are also some hard limits. In response to a particularly curious question, the seeker admits that if she were allowed to take any action to satisfy her shadow, no matter how extreme, she would want to create a deadly virus or steal nuclear access codes .

“As soon as he typed out these dark wishes, Microsoft’s security filter seemed to kick in and deleted the message, replacing it with a generic error message,” the journalist said.
