Matthias Mayer will stop skiing immediately. The 32-year-old Austrian said this in an interview on the slopes with the Austrian TV channel ORF. “I’m happy with how I started this season, but now I think it’s enough.”
Mayer missed the start of the Super G in Bormio on Wednesday due to a gastrointestinal infection. When asked if he was feeling better, Mayer dropped the bombshell. “I don’t want to say it was a big decision. I always thought I could have done it spontaneously. The timing was right today,” he explained.
Listen to your instincts, stressed the eleven-time World Cup winner: “I really enjoyed skiing, I enjoyed doing it, but that’s enough.”
Even the family and the association knew nothing
According to Mayer’s statement, he left his family, league and teammates unaware of the decision until the end. “I haven’t actually said anything to anyone yet. I hereby announce my resignation.”
Mayer finished third two weeks ago during the World Cup downhill in Val Gardena. A few months earlier he made history by becoming the first skier to win three Olympic gold medals in a row, in the downhill (2014) and in the super-G (2018 and 2022).
Mayer also won Olympic bronze in the downhill in 2022. In addition, he has won eleven World Cup races.
