Former Spanish legendary Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas has revealed he is gay. The revelation came through a tweet posted on Sunday afternoon. “I hope you respect me, I’m gay,” the former Spain captain revealed in a tweet. Following the reveal, former Spain team-mate Carles Puyol stepped forward to support the 41-year-old.
Casillas ended his marriage to sports journalist Sara Carbonero in March 2021. The separation occurred after five years of marriage. They have two boys.
Casillas played 510 games for Real Madrid. He has been involved in many titles such as three Champions League, five La Liga, four Super Copa and two Copa del Rey. Between 2000 and 2016, Spain won 167 games. For his country he won the 2010 World Cup and the 2000 Euro Cup. Casillas is considered one of the best goalkeepers in the history of football. He retired in 2020 after suffering a heart attack while training at the Portuguese club Porto, which last wore his shirt.
