Russian hockey player Ilya Kovalchuk is scheduled to serve at the Beijing Olympics (February 4-20, 2022) as the team leader representing the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC).

According to several Russian media, Kovaľčuk will also become the assistant head coach Alexei Žamnov in the selection of hockey players.
The Russians had previously published a report that Zhamnov would be helped in Beijing by other former hockey players Sergei Gonchar, Yevgeny Nabokov, Sergei Fiodorov and Alexei Kudashov. The official announcement of the name of the head coach and information about the coaching staff of the national team will be available to the public at a press conference on 18 October.
The Russians will meet in the B-group with the Czechs, Swiss and Danes, they have recently published the first three names in the nomination. The games will include goalkeeper Andrei Vasilevsky, striker Nikita Kucherov (both from Tampa Bay) and Washington Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin.
