MOSCOW, January 1. Corr. TASS Rustam Sharafutdinov. Olympic champion and three-time Gagarin Cup winner Ilya Kovalchuk showed in his first matches for Spartak Moscow that he is not inferior to younger players. This opinion was expressed to TASS by three-time world champion and five-time Gagarin Cup winner Danis Zaripov.
Kovalchuk signed a contract with Spartak until the end of the season, which was announced in early December. In the first two matches, the 40-year-old forward scored two goals.
“I saw his matches, and I got the impression that Ilya was quietly playing somewhere, and was not resting or involved in management. In terms of movement, he is not inferior to anyone, including young guys. Well, as we see, everything is in order with performance,” Zaripov said.
“I’m very happy for him, and it remains to be seen in the future whether he played those first matches out of emotion. “I’m sure he didn’t come out for a few games, but to lead the team to victory,” he added.
