[Ils l’ouvrent] Chinon hospital in a major crisis

Labeled baby-friendly, the maternity ward of the Chinon hospital is very popular with parents who want special support for the arrival of a child. But since Tuesday evening, May 17, she only provides care before and after childbirth. The birth activity is suspended until further notice by decision of the management. And it is the same for the activity of the emergencies since Wednesday morning 7 a.m. as well as that of the short-term hospitalization service since Monday and at least until May 30.

The reason for this wave of closures is an upsurge in sick leave by medical and paramedical staff. The reason: burnout, related to working conditions. The same reasons as in Orléans or Bordeaux, two other hospitals paralyzed by a sudden lack of available staff (Amboise is also in crisis with closures of night emergencies on weekends, but this time because of vacancies) .

According to the management of the Chinonais establishment, vital emergencies continue to be taken care of by calling 15, since the SMUR continues to operate for road accidents or those occurring at home (even if it had been announced as initially suspended). For other care, you have to go to general practitioners or other hospitals and clinics in the department, several tens of kilometers away. Ditto for deliveries, women being sent back to the establishment “of their choice” with the possibility of returning to Chinon afterwards by requesting their transfer.

This situation is a nightmare for the patients. And if it allows to alert on the difficulties of the agents, it is seen as a solution of last resort by the union FO (which calls to demonstrate in front of the establishment this Thursday at 2 p.m.):

“While trade unions and caregivers have sounded the alarm several times in recent months regarding emergency staff, management persists in imposing job cuts and not replacing leave. Foreseeable consequence: the exhaustion of caregivers is such that many agents are now off work on the decision of their attending physician, due to the inaction of management. »

Alongside this, the agents of the emergency paramedic team currently absent sign a letter to their managers: “Despite several alerts that have been made, you remain deaf[s] to our demands and our suffering. We continue to observe the deterioration of our working conditions and consequently the quality of our care. The entire staff is very saddened by this situation and hopes that you will quickly be able to find solutions. »

Staff representatives are also targeting the Regional Health Agency and the government, accused of imposing budgetary restrictions. According to them, we should immediately have 3 nurses and two nursing assistants every night, 1 more nurse during the day, 1 qualified hospital service worker morning and evening 7 days a week, 2 stretcher-bearers and a secretary as well as a systematic replacement stops.
