Saturday, November 27, 2021 will mark the grand launch of end of year festivities To Caen (Calvados). Christmas market, illuminations, shows of all kinds … The municipality will multiply initiatives to liven up the city center and neighborhoods.
The Christmas market is moving
Organized by Caen Events, the traditional Christmas market will move. From November 27 to December 31, the 50 chalets occupied by various traders (gastronomy, crafts, games for children, decoration, jewelry, etc.) will be set up along Boulevard Leclerc, and on the places du Théâtre and the Republic. For the same reason that Gourmet November was relocated to the Abbaye-aux-Hommes this year:
We have started to refocus the Friday market on Place Saint-Sauveur, to free up part of the Fossés Saint-Julien. We also wanted to offer a real route in the city center.
Note that from December 4, the market will receive regular visits from Santa Claus. “He will begin his stroll on Boulevard Leclerc, to reach his house at Place de la République around 4:30 pm. “He will then be present every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday, from 3 pm to 7 pm,” and will leave on December 24 at 4 pm to prepare his tour “.
700 patterns, 15 km of garlands and 28 trees
Saturday November 27 will also mark the official launch of the illuminations in the city center and the districts, at 7 p.m. As every year, the City has put the package “with more than 700 decorations and patterns, and 15 km of garlands, around the theme of gold and silver”, specifies Ludwig Willaume, the deputy mayor in charge of public spaces.
For the occasion, we will also launch the illuminations “on the facades of the Hôtel-de-Ville, the Place Saint-Sauveur, the Leroy Tower and the Guérinière water tower”.
Three large fir trees will also be installed in places Saint-Sauveur and de la République, and in Square Soreth. 25 smaller trees will also be located on Boulevard Leclerc and in the squares of Caen neighborhoods.
A stroll through Remue-Ménage
Already passed through Caen in 2018, the company Stir-Household will accompany the launch of the illuminations on November 27.
From 5.30 p.m., these artists will invite you to follow the marvelous procession of the show The Flight, “An imaginary world populated by crazy characters and superb birds”.

The stroll will start from the Place du Théâtre, before crossing the streets Pierre-Aimé-Lair, de Strasbourg, Saint-Pierre and Demolombe, to reach the Place Saint-Sauveur.
Unique scenography on Place Saint-Sauveur
The little game of “musical chairs” continues. The illumination show offered at Place de la République in 2020, “which attracted a lot of people,” insists Catherine Pradal-Chazarenc, will be held at Place Saint-Sauveur this winter. From December 17 to January 2, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., the Cherbourg company Atlantid will offer an original show “specially designed for Caen and adapted to the specificities of the site”.
The Norman company has imagined a sparkling star 4 meters high “which will illuminate the square with its thousand facets”. A show of colored lasers, a shower of giant bubbles and magical fountains will complete this unique scenography.
And for more interactivity, a box will collect the wishes of the children which will be projected on the facades the next day.
Shows of all kinds
In addition to Stir-Household, other companies will come to liven up the streets of Caen by the end of the year. Sunday December 12, we will invite you to follow the Tonic Graffiti from The mouth. This vocal trio will invest the Christmas market to offer their “show to share”.
Wednesday December 15, the company’s slide-tailed dragon 4 seasons will wander Place Bouchard, rue Saint-Pierre and rue de Strasbourg. Every 5 minutes, children will be invited to come aboard in groups of 6 to enjoy a song ride.
Finally, on Wednesday December 22, Plasticizers will present Cycl’A Dream, a bike ride that will venture into the Place de la République and Place du Théâtre, and along Boulevard Leclerc. On the program: poems, songs and make-up.

- Treasure hunt. The children have an appointment from November 27 to December 12 for a treasure hunt. They will have to discover letters hidden in the city center with surprises.
- Rides. The Carrousel and Au petit monde will be located at Place Bouchard and Place du Théâtre.
