Illiteracy in Reunion: 9th national day of actions “All interested” in Saint-Denis

From 7 to 17 September, the Municipality of Saint-Denis, with various associations, organizes workshops, works and events at the Mediateca François Mitterrand and the La Montagne Library to raise awareness and support those affected by illiteracy. .

The press release:

An inclusive and fraternal city, Saint-Denis renews its commitment against inequalities in 2022 by actively participating in the 9th National Day of Action against Illiteracy (JNAI). City services and association partners will be mobilized in this fight from 7 to 17 September to ensure the presentation of their work and events.

10 years of events to combat illiteracy:

In addition to this day dedicated to the actors of the fight against illiteracy, Saint-Denis has hosted and will host several events during the JNAI. Between them :

To the François Mitterrand Media Library:

Friday 16 September from 10:00 to 11:00 and Saturday 17 September from 10:30 to 11:30: reading sessions for children “Bouillie de Culture”, led by Cathy Forestier for children 0-3 years old.

In the Grand Hall of the Old Town Hall:

Friday 16 September morning: lecture by Anne Vinérier, Doctor of Education.

Friday 16 September afternoon: workshops to train Reunion Island actors in the fight against illiteracy.

The François Mitterrand Mediatheque and all the libraries in the city are tools to prevent illiteracy, both by allowing professionals to take action against this scourge, and by allowing different audiences to access books.

Jacqueline Payet, elected delegate for the fight against illiteracy :

“We chose to collaborate with the François Mitterrand Mediateca because it is a symbolic place: most of the time the illiterate do not cross the threshold of the libraries.

However, the illiteracy rate in Reunion is three times higher than in mainland France, with 120,000 illiterate on the island. Not all are on the same level. And seeing children stuck in illiteracy is not acceptable in 2022. Reunion also welcomes many people from the Indian Ocean area and illiteracy creates a barrier to their integration.

Even if the fight against this scourge is not the primary responsibility of the Municipality, Saint-Denis is an inclusive city that wants to be involved and concretely involved in the fight against inequalities. It is also the only municipality in Réunion to have a delegation dedicated to the fight against illiteracy. This is a will of the mayor of Saint-Denis, who more generally invests many resources in education, in the fight against illectronism, in the School of Happiness, etc.

These National Days of Action against Illiteracy are part of many of our political commitments: Saint-Denis is an inclusive, fraternal and ambitious city, in the sense that we want everyone to get by. We also believe that everyone can become an actor in this fight in Saint-Denis. In addition, all the libraries in the city participate throughout the year in the fight against illiteracy, with training against illiteracy, and numerous fun activities and workshops dedicated to children and adults.

Saint-Denis is a big city, you have to act everywhere! “
