Illinois to expand health coverage for undocumented seniors

Maribel Cordero, who is a breast cancer survivor, walks to her car to meet her husband Miguel Cordero to go to a doctors appointment in Chicago on Thursday, Aug. 19, 2021. Cordero will be one of the nearly 11,000 non-citizens who will benefit from the Medicaid extension that would provide free healthcare coverage for undocumented living in Illinois in 2022. When Maribel was diagnosed with cancer she couldn’t get access to treatment right away, leaving her anguished and hopeless. Though Maribel is stable now, she turned diabetic and has several other illnesses that she has been able to treat thanks to the hospitals’ charitable programs. However, she is heavily medicated and pays for most medicine out of pocket totaling nearly $3,000 a month. (Jose M. Osorio/ Chicago Tribune) (Jose M. Osorio / Chicago Tribune)
