On the 22nd, according to data submitted by the National Police Agency by Rep. Jung Woo-taek (People’s Power, Cheongju-si, Sangdang-gu, Chungcheongbuk-do), a member of the National Assembly’s Public Administration and Security Committee, the amount of damages to virtual currency illegal activities for five years from 2018 to 2022 reached 5.2941 trillion won.
The amount of damage soared to ▲ 169.3 billion won in 2018 ▲ 763.8 billion won in 2019 ▲ 213.6 billion won in 2020 ▲ 3,128.2 billion won in 2021. Last year, it decreased to 1.192 trillion won due to a drop in the price of virtual assets such as coins, but it still exceeded 1 trillion won.
The number of illegal activities related to virtual currency was 841 (2135) over the past five years. There were 616 cases (1,819 people) of ‘virtual currency pseudo-receipt and multi-level’, accounting for 73% of the total.
Coin purchase agency fraud between acquaintances accounted for 177 cases (224 people), 21.0%, and 48 cases (92 people) of illegal activities such as fraud and embezzlement by virtual currency exchange employees accounted for 5.7%.
