Illegal street vendors to face legal action by Department of Cleaning

Mayor Adams announces that the City’s Cleaning Department will take over law enforcement of illegal street vendors.

This is part of an effort by the mayor of New York to better control the problem of the proliferation of unauthorized vendors and the mess and uncleanliness they cause.

Vending regulations are currently enforced by the city’s Department of Consumer and Worker Protection, but that will end this April 1st when the Housekeeping Department takes over that role.

Before the mayor’s announcement, the Street Vendors Project issued a statement, and we quote:

“Vendors provide affordable lunches, fresh fruit to underserved neighborhoods, and souvenirs to tourists, and are central to the soul of our city…”

“…Small businesses run by immigrants, veterans and low-income New Yorkers are not garbage,” he said.
