Chinese drug manufacturer Sinopharm has received conditional permission to use its corona vaccine for the entire Chinese people. It is the first vaccine to be widely available in China.
The country has been vaccinated with various vaccines since the summer, but on the basis of an emergency vaccination program. This applies, for example, to people who often travel outside of China for their work, risk groups and military personnel. It is estimated that more than a million people have been vaccinated, out of a population of 1.4 billion.
China now wants to rapidly expand the vaccination campaign and aims to vaccinate 50 million residents by mid-February. Tests have shown that the vaccine from state-owned Sinopharm has an effectiveness of 79.3 percent, according to the Chinese medicine watchdog. Earlier this month, the United Arab Emirates announced that it will use the Sinopharm vaccine.
