The authorities in Teleorman county discovered, following the checks carried out on Thursday, an illegal asylum, used as a boarding house, in Pietroșani, where 17 elderly people were kept, some of them with disabilities. The owner of the “pension” allegedly told the authorities that the people were tourists, on vacation, but the neighbors denied it, saying that the elderly were not allowed to leave the building and that they often heard desperate cries of hunger, according to IPJ Teleorman and totalimpact.ro.
“On July 13, police officers from the Teleorman Economic Crime Investigation Service, Zimnicea City Police and Section no. 12 Zimnicea Rural Police descended on a building located in Pietroșani commune, Teleorman county. Following the checks, 17 elderly and disabled people were found in that building, which was operating as a boarding house,” the authorities state.
The building belonged to a 47-year-old woman from the locality, and, according to the first information, it housed the headquarters of a commercial company, whose object was accommodation services, being established in September 2022.
The woman who managed the place allegedly told authorities that the elderly people were, in fact, tourists on vacation, according to totalimpact.ro. The neighbors of the fake boarding house would have said that an asylum was operating there, and the persons were not allowed to leave the building. They also say that desperate cries of hunger were often heard, some of them managing to reach neighbors’ fences to ask for food.
“All the structures with attributions on the line of verification and control have been notified, in order to carry out checks according to the competence”, the press release also states.
The people found in the illegal center were transported to medical facilities for specialized care, and their relatives were also contacted.
The police have drawn up a criminal file, in terms of committing the crimes of exercising a profession or activity without the right and tax evasion.
Also, two contraventional sanctions, in the amount of 12,000 lei, were applied to the legal entity.
